Sydney Times Review

Can you improve on perfection? Judging by her first Sydney Opera House show, Roberta Flack has done exactly that.
By the time you finish reading this review, tickets for Roberta Flack's final two Sydney shows could well be sold out, so dial for tickets with one hand and read on.

The six-time Grammy Award winner, responsible for generations of lovers getting busy to some of the most beautiful love songs ever written, graced the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House last night for her first of three Sydney shows. Accompanied by her smooth and sexy band The Real Artists Symposium, and backed by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra itself, Roberta Flack was in undisputable fine form.

Within the first half of the show Flack had seduced the audience with signature greats such as 'Where is the Love', 'Feel Like Makin' Love', and 'It Might Be You'. Flack's voice remains flawless 37 years since she released her smash hit 'Killing Me Softly'; over the course of three decades she has achieved the impossible and improved on perfection.

Unlike many touring artists of her vintage, Flack still manages to connect with the audience. Between instigating a bout of audience participation in the form of a 'do-re-me'-inspired singing lesson, dedicating a song to the victims and families of Victoria's bush fire tragedies and then offering to pull together a free show as a benefit fundraiser before she leaves town, Flack proved her heart was as big as her voice.

Perhaps the most moving aspect to her performance is seeing how passionate and connected Roberta Flack is to the art form which has made her a household name.
